RIPE Index — Interactive Map
An interactive reading of the RIPE Index: how twenty Council of Europe states treat their Roma communities, across six themes, in one map.
About the project
The RIPE Index is the civil society monitoring tool that assesses the state of Roma inclusion, equality and participation across Europe. Its findings arrive as a long PDF report; this work turns them into something a policy officer, a journalist or a Roma organization can actually navigate — a choropleth of the twenty assessed states with a guided scrollytelling introduction, per-country profiles, thematic comparison, charts and the full data table underneath. The methodology stays visible throughout: bands are derived from the published indicator ratings rather than invented as a score, and every figure traces back to the report. It was built as a working prototype for ERGO Network's call for a web developer for the Index. ERGO Network appointed another contractor; the prototype is kept here as the record of the approach.
Impact
- Turns a long PDF report into a navigable map of twenty countries and six themes.
- Derived concern bands stay traceable to the published indicator ratings, so the methodology remains auditable.
- Built for accessibility: colour-blind-safe palette, hatch textures that survive greyscale, and a full text equivalent of every visual.
- Interface and study content translated into nine languages, including Bulgarian, Hungarian, Romanian and Slovak.
